Lure archetype · Failure case

Over-ballasted crank (rolls and skates)

Deliberately wrong. The ballast sits along the back, above the centre of buoyancy, so there is no righting couple. This is the bait every builder makes once.

The shape

What is this test design?

This is a deliberate failed crankbait build, not a lure recommendation. Moving its ballast onto the back removes the restoring couple the Tank needs to keep a lipped bait upright.

The Tank test

What the model actually measures

The grid uses 1 cm cells. The Tank computes displaced water, centre of mass, lip force, tracking stability and wobble at its default retrieve speed. It does not predict a running depth or a catch rate. See the equations and limits.

The medium diver with its lead moved to the top row and the hook hangers removed.

  • 4 × Lead ballast
  • 21 × ABS plastic
  • 1 × Line tie
  • 1 × Rattle chamber
  • 2 × Lip

Tank verdict: Rolls over

It rolls over. The centre of mass sits at or above the centre of buoyancy, so there is no righting couple — this bait will lie on its side and skate.

  • Move ballast DOWN. Weight below the centreline is what keeps a bait upright.
  • 1 rattle chamber: adds an acoustic signature the lateral line reads before the eyes do.
  • No hook hangers. Also worth noting they hang low, so they double as keel weight.

Compare with the medium diver

Both designs run through the same Tank model at its default retrieve speed. These figures describe the block builds shown here, not commercial lures.
